Sustainable Self-help Enterprises

Many poor people can make a living if provided with the basic resources. For example, many poor people can make a living by building a small but sustainable stall in front of their house and prepare simple meals to sell. This project helps them construct the stall, provides some start-up food to cook for sale. A woman struggles daily to provide for her severely disabled son and other child. Poor people like this often do not have access to the same services as the rich, and medical expenses can cripple a family. This woman has started a small stall in front of her home selling basic food stuffs, but needs ongoing support. She would love to have a small business raising geese and selling their eggs but needs the capital to begin. You can help her start this sustainable self-help enterprise. You can also help someone earn a living carving small statues and ornamented boxes for sale in tourist shops. We are trying to establish more direct links with sellers who will give him a higher price for his carvings. Small business enterprises such as popcorn making can provide a poor person with a daily income. Providing a basic popcorn maker and a starter pack of corn and oil, is an example of ways you can help a poor family get a head start.

Crisis Relief

Indonesia has experiened a string of natural disasters, and efforts to help the people affected continues. Aceh was at the epicentre of the devastation unleashed by the tsunami in 2003 and families continue to need the help provided by projects which help them to be economically self-sufficient. Another example is the Mentawai Islands which lie in an active earthquake zone in the Indian Ocean. Severe earthquake damage has placed the islands in need of food, educational and medical supplies, and earthquake-proof housing.
